If you thought smart home technology was only for inside, think again. For even our gardens are growing better with the latest smart gadgets! The smart home of the future is extending beyond your four walls and into the yard - be it a home garden or an agricultural venture.
One example is the Edyn Wi-Fi-enabled Water Sensor and Water Valve that keeps tabs on soil nutrition and moisture levels and automatically delivers the exact amount of water necessary to eliminate waste.
The Bluetooth-enabled Parrot H2O and Pot perform the same task for your potted plants.
The answers are in the cloud
The Edyn Garden Sensor is solar-powered, with a rechargeable lithium iron phosphate battery for cloudy days. It constantly measures the ambient temperature, humidity, light intensity and soil electrical conductivity. That information is relayed back to the free Edyn iOS app via the cloud. The app then analyzes your garden’s unique conditions and provides tips for maximizing your plants’ health. Pretty cool, eh?
Another company, Blossom, is also tackling garden irrigation, using your home's existing watering system with a wireless controller that can be programmed through an app to create different zones in your garden.
It will also tap into online weather data and override your instructions should rain be on the way.
Spending less will make you appy
Of course, many of these smart gadgets for home and garden cost a lot of money, so the release of some low priced gardening apps for your phone is great news.
The Eden Garden Designer for iPhones is a fun one. Simply take a picture of your garden and then use the app to experiment with different plants and trees. It will even show you different looks for different seasons.
The Essential Garden Guide is a database of over 30 vegetables and 10 fruits. It will tell you everything you need to know about planting and caring for your plants.
Even the ABC has a Gardening Australia Vegie Guide App to help you garden like a pro. While Yates' My Garden App is a complete gardening resource to help you plan, grow and maintain a better garden.
Full of tips, ideas and visualization aids, it would also make a great Christmas gift for your green-thumbed friends.
The right Tools for the job
The Gardening Toolkit is one of our favourites. It's a complete garden app that keeps growing as information is constantly updated.
The list of features is endless, and includes location-based growing advice, month-by-month tips, a database of over 1000 plants, interactive question time, plant-tracking photos and more.
But if a phone app doesn't get you that excited, there is one more totally awesome gadget to share - a gadget that everyone will want. The Husqvarna Automower® Robotic Mower. Yep, a lawnmower that does it for you!
The Automower can manage up to 6,000sqm of lawn in any weather, with rough terrain and slopes up to 45%. When it meets an obstacle it stops and redirects itself.
So move that garden chair into the shade, grab a cold beer and get down to the serious job of mowing the grass this weekend!
