What The . . . ?

The most haunted house in Australia is said to be the Monte Christo Homestead in Junee in NSW. Constructed by local pioneer Christopher William Crawley in 1885, the late Victorian manor house stands on a hill overlooking the town and has featured in several TV shows about the paranormal.

The Crawley family remained in residence until 1948. The house then stood empty under the care of several caretakers until 1963 when it was purchased by Reg and Olive Ryan, who restored it to its current condition. It operates as a museum, antique store and tourist attraction.

The home's dark history includes many accidents, deaths and strange happenings, including a stable boy died from his injuries after his mattress was set on fire; a mentally handicapped boy allegedly chained inside a cottage in the grounds for 30 years, and the ever lingering spirit of Mrs Crawley.
